The original dam on Lake Cushman was created by glaciers during the last ice age.
The lake was carved out by the glacier, and while retreating, the glacier caused a moraine that dammed the Skokomish River and formed the lake.
Lake Cushman was named in honor of Orrington Cushman, who served as interpreter for Governor Isaac Stevens during the Treaty of Point Elliott negotiations with Puget Sound Indians in 1854.
