Buxton
Most famous for Cape Hatteras lighthouse protecting sailors from Cape Point where the Gulf Stream
and Labrador currents intersect. Waters off the Cape Point Coast are known as Diamond Shoals and
the Graveyard of the Atlantic.
Frisco
Previously known as Trent, but received the name Frisco in 1898. Home to the only airfield on the
island.
Hatteras
Named by the Croatan Indians. Hatteras, an English rendition meaning "there is less vegetation".
Ocracoke
Well known for the legends of Blackbeard, a pirate able to navigate the treacherous waters which provided him a hide out til his death in 1718.
