This is a beautifully detailed, laser engraved and precision cut Map of Upper St. Regis Lake in the Adirondack Mountains in northeastern, New York with the following interesting stats carved into it:

  • Surface Area: 742 Acres
  • In 1899, the members of the St. Regis Yacht Club commissioned Clinton Crane to design a class of wooden sailing sloops for racing on the Upper St. Regis Lake. A few members contracted to purchase the first of these boats, which were to be called Idems (Latin for same), and to sail them annually in competition. Over the next few years more club members contracted for these sleek vessels until there were an even dozen boats whose sails would catch the wind each summer as they competed. Today, these same twelve, unique sloops continue this racing tradition — some even skippered by descendants of those original owners.

Interesting factoid: The Idem was one of Clinton Crane’s first projects. At 32 feet overall and 19 feet at the waterline, the gaff-rigged scow sloop with a non-overlapping, clubfoot boom, was designed for the St. Regis Yacht Club. Members wanted a design that was fine-tuned for flat water and the normally light air conditions on St. Regis. Flat sections, narrow beam and 600-square-foot working sail area met their requirements. But even with a ballasted centerboard and crew on the rail, the sometimes gusty days of summer can up the ante; capsizes are familiar territory and still excite spectators. (Not all of this information made it onto the map, we just love to read up on the lakes we design).
